Les Claypool – Primus – 2011
In 1990 I was the “Chief Photographer” for BAM Magazine. A bi-monthly newsprint music rag that covered the California Music scene. I was asked to photograph an upcoming band named Primus. 3 kids who called Berkeley, Ca. their home at the time. Most people who were seeing this band categorized them as “Thrash Metal”. I heard something different and saw them as more of psychedelic pioneers taking a genre of music and bending it in to new shapes. This band is now past their 25 year mark with Lead Singer, Bass Player and Creative Mastermind Les Claypool still calling the Bay Area home. That first magazine cover led to numerous feature stories, more covers, CD packages, and ultimately a coffee Table book that I published on the bands first 15 years as a rock band. Always a visual treat, as well as a tough band to photograph on stage (they like it real dark) I have found some interesting angles to take advantage of the low light they like to play in, and took this photo of Les Claypool at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley which was just a dream for them to someday play when we first worked together in 1990!
