In 1989 I was assigned to make a “San Francisco” photograph of rocker Sammy Hagar for Rolling Stone magazine. I brought him to the Marin County overlook of the city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge and shot him jumping in the air, legs split with the majestic bridge behind him! After he saw that photo in Rolling Stone, we became instant friends and frequent collaborators! I was in Mexico for the opening of his Cabo Wabo Cantina where Van Halen performed, and have photographed him on and off stage dozens of times over the years. In 2002 he was set to record a live CD with his band the Wabarito’s at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore Auditorium, and he asked me to do the photos. Sammy’s live shows are high energy, hard rocking and full of sweat…great ingredients for amazing live concert photographs! Then he jumped!
